Savings Account Related

I moved to Dubai 8 months ago and still use my old savings account. I have below doubts: 1. Do I really have to convert it to NRO? 2. What happens if I don't convert? 3. Within how much time the conversion needs to be done (if it Mandatory)? If someone has gone through this experience, please guide.

Yes, it should be converted, and the sooner the better. 1. Do I really have to convert? Yes. Under India's foreign exchange rules (FEMA), you became an NRI the day you moved to Dubai for work. You don't have to wait 182 days. A regular savings account is meant for residents only, so it needs to be re-designated as an NRO account. 2. What happens if I don't? • Your bank can restrict or freeze the account when it finds out during a KYC check. • It is a technical breach of FEMA, and the law allows penalties for it. • Your income and tax records stay under the wrong status, which makes filing a tax return messy. 3. How soon? There is no grace period. The rule is "as soon as your status changes." At 8 months, just do it now. Banks handle late requests like this all the time.
