Inoperative PAN

My PAN shows "inoperative" but I'm an NRI without Aadhaar. What do I do? (Asked by NRI Client in our WhatsApp Group)

This is fixable. Your PAN isn't cancelled, and the cause isn't Aadhaar. Why it happened: The tax department checked whether you had filed a return as an NRI in the last 3 years, or had told your tax officer you're an NRI. If neither showed up, your PAN was marked inoperative, even though NRIs don't need Aadhaar. What it affects: Banks deduct TDS at a higher rate, and tax refunds are held. You can still file your tax return.
