Your Indian Driving Licence Is Expiring. Can You Renew It From Abroad?

Rules & Compliance · Published 22 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

The licence that ran out quietly

Kiran moved to Dubai in 2020. His Indian driving licence expired in 2023, and he didn't notice. He drove in Dubai on his UAE licence, so it didn't seem to matter.

Last month, he went home to Nagpur and wanted to drive his father's car. His sister glanced at the licence: "Bhaiya, this expired two years ago."

If he'd renewed within a year of expiry, it would have been a simple form. Now his RTO told him he'd need to take a driving test again.

How Indian licence renewal works

Indian driving licences for private vehicles are valid for a long period, but they do expire, often around age 40 or 50, then every few years after that. Renewal is handled by your state's transport department through the Parivahan (Sarathi) website.

The time windows that matter

When you actWhat usually happens
Before expiryRenew online with a simple form. Easiest
Within one year after expiryRenew with the same form, sometimes with a small late fee
More than one year after expiryRenewal may need a driving test again, or a fresh licence

It's also illegal to drive in India on an expired licence. Fines can be heavy.

Can you do it from abroad?

Partly. You can usually start the renewal online from anywhere. But most states still need at least one of these done in India:

  • Biometrics and photo at the RTO, unless your state accepts Aadhaar eKYC for this step.
  • A medical certificate (Form 1A) from a registered doctor if you're over 40.
  • Collecting or receiving the new card at your Indian address.

So the practical answer for most NRIs is: plan your renewal around a trip home, and start the online part before you fly.

Driving abroad on an Indian licence

Many countries let visitors drive for a short time on an Indian licence with an International Driving Permit (IDP). Residents of most countries need a local licence. An IDP is issued in India by the RTO, so get it before you leave if you need one.

The solution: check the date, then plan one trip

Kiran booked his driving test for his next visit. His sister now has his licence expiry date in her calendar too.

  • Check your licence expiry date today. It's printed on the card, or shown on the Parivahan website.
  • Set a reminder six months before it expires.
  • Over 40? Plan to get Form 1A from a registered doctor in India.
  • Start the renewal online on Parivahan (Sarathi) a few weeks before your trip, and book the RTO appointment if your state needs one.
  • Give an Indian address where someone can receive the new card.
  • Keep the acknowledgement receipt until the new card arrives.
  • Driving abroad on an Indian licence? Get an International Driving Permit from the RTO while you're in India.

The 30-second takeaway

Renewing on time is a simple form. Waiting more than a year can mean a new driving test. Check your expiry date today, and plan the renewal into your next trip home.
