OCI Rules Changed in 2026. Do You Need to Act?

Stopped at the check-in counter
Aarav was born in New Jersey. His parents got him an OCI card when he was eight, linked to his first US passport.
At 21, he renewed his US passport and flew to Delhi for his cousin's wedding. At the airline counter, the agent looked at his new passport, then at his OCI card. "This OCI is linked to an old passport, and you were a child when it was issued. I'm not sure you can travel on this."
Aarav made the flight after a tense half hour and a call to a supervisor. What he didn't know: his OCI needed a one-time re-issue after he turned 20 and got a new passport.
OCI in one minute
The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is for people of Indian origin who hold a foreign passport. It works like a lifelong visa: you can visit India as often as you like and stay as long as you want.
The card is linked to a specific passport. When you change passports, India's records need to know.
What changed in 2026
- Online only: applications and updates are now filed online on the OCI services portal.
- e-OCI: an electronic OCI record can be issued instead of a printed booklet. Existing booklets stay valid.
- Late updates cost money: if you don't upload a new passport within three months of getting it, a late fee applies (around US$25).
- Standard fees (US, approximately): new OCI US$275, re-issue US$25, lost card US$100. Fees differ by country.
When to update, and when to re-issue
| Your situation | What you need to do |
|---|---|
| Under 20, got a new passport | Upload the new passport details online, within 3 months |
| OCI issued when you were a minor, new passport after turning 20 | Re-issue the OCI, once |
| OCI issued at 20 or older, renewed passport | Usually nothing, though uploading the new passport keeps the record clean |
| Turned 50 and got a new passport | Upload the first new passport after 50 |
| OCI through marriage to an Indian citizen or OCI holder | Upload every new passport |
Things OCI holders still can't do
- Vote in Indian elections or hold elected office.
- Buy agricultural land, plantations or farmhouses.
- Hold an Indian passport at the same time.
- Some activities, such as research, journalism and mountaineering in certain areas, need special permission.
An OCI can also be cancelled if the holder is sentenced to two years or more in prison, or charge-sheeted for a serious offence.
The solution: a two-minute check for every family member
Aarav's parents now keep a simple list of every OCI in the family: passport number, OCI number, age when issued, and when the next action is due.
- Check each OCI card: which passport is it linked to? How old was the holder when it was issued?
- New passport in the last 3 months? Upload it on the OCI services portal now, while it's free.
- Children turning 20: plan the one-time re-issue with their first passport after 20.
- When you fly, carry your current passport, your OCI card and, if you have it, the old passport the OCI was issued on.
- Lost the card? Apply for a replacement before your next trip, not at the airport.
The 30-second takeaway
Your OCI is tied to a passport. New passport? Upload it within three months. Child turning 20? Re-issue once.
