Invest in mutual funds as an NRI

NRIs can invest in Indian mutual funds through an NRE or NRO account once KYC shows NRI status.

Keep these ready

Steps

  1. Complete KYC as an NRI with a KYC agency or the fund house, using your passport and overseas address.
  2. Fill in the FATCA declaration with your country of tax residence.
  3. Invest from your NRE account (money can go back abroad) or NRO account (money stays in India).
  4. If you live in the USA or Canada, check first: many fund houses do not accept investments from residents of these countries.
  5. When you redeem, tax is deducted at source on any gains. Claim credit for it when you file your ITR in India and your tax return abroad.
