Change your savings account to NRO after moving abroad
Once you become an NRI, FEMA rules say your resident savings account must be changed to an NRO account. Tell your bank soon after you move.
Keep these ready
- Passport and visa or residence permit
- Overseas address proof
- PAN card
- Account number
Steps
- Tell your bank in writing, or through its NRI desk or net banking, that you are now an NRI.
- Fill in the bank's change of status form (resident to NRI).
- Send self-attested copies of your passport, visa or residence permit, overseas address proof and PAN.
- Ask the bank to change any fixed deposits, locker and nominee details linked to the account as well.
- Get written confirmation that the account is now NRO. Interest on it is taxable in India and the bank deducts TDS.
Good to know
If you want the lower tax rate under India's tax treaty with your country, ask the bank what it needs, usually a Tax Residency Certificate from your country.
