You Have an Indian Bank Account. Can You Use UPI From Abroad?

PF, Banking & Money · Published 22 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

"Just scan the QR, beta"

Meera lives in Dubai. On a visit home to Kochi, her father's plumber finished a repair and held up his phone: "Just scan the QR, chechi."

Meera had an NRE account with money in it, but no Indian SIM. She assumed UPI was only for people with Indian numbers, so she walked to the ATM instead.

Back in Dubai, a friend showed her UPI working on her UAE number, linked to her NRE account. "You could have paid in five seconds," the friend said.

UPI now works with many foreign numbers

UPI is India's instant payment system: you scan a QR code or enter a UPI ID, and money moves from your bank account in seconds. For years it needed an Indian mobile number. That's no longer always true.

NRIs with an NRE or NRO account can now use UPI with their international mobile number from a growing list of countries. At last count there were 12, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Hong Kong, France and Malaysia.

What you need for Route 1

  • Your bank must support UPI on international numbers. Many large banks do, but not all, so ask yours.
  • The overseas number must be the same number your bank has on record for the account.
  • The number must be able to receive SMS, because the app verifies it by text.
  • A debit card for the account, to set your UPI PIN.
  • A UPI app that supports international numbers, such as your bank's own app or a popular UPI app.

Limits to know

  • Usually up to ₹1 lakh a day, across up to 20 payments. Some categories, such as hospitals, may allow more.
  • A new UPI ID may be limited to about ₹5,000 in its first 24 hours.

The solution: set it up once, before your next trip

Meera set up UPI on her UAE number in ten minutes. On her next visit, she paid the plumber, the autorickshaw and her father's electricity bill without touching cash.

Set it up

  • Ask your bank whether UPI on international numbers is enabled for your NRE or NRO account.
  • Check that your bank has your overseas number on the account. Update it first if needed.
  • Install the UPI app, choose your country code, and verify by SMS. On an iPhone, use mobile data rather than Wi-Fi during setup.
  • Set your UPI PIN with your debit card.
  • Test with a small amount, such as ₹1 to a family member.

Stay safe

  • Never share your UPI PIN. You never need a PIN to receive money.
  • Decline unexpected "collect" requests. Approving one sends money out of your account.
  • Check the name shown before paying a new UPI ID.

The 30-second takeaway

You don't need an Indian SIM for UPI anymore. Link your NRE or NRO account to your overseas number, set a PIN, and pay like a local.
